I’ve spent my career on both sides of the divide between tech and nonprofits – often acting as a translator between two worlds that are trying to work together, but don’t always understand each other.
This article isn’t a critique of either side. There are brilliant people, good intentions and valuable solutions across both sectors. But time and again, I’ve seen projects stall, opportunities missed, and trust eroded – not because the product wasn’t right, but because the context wasn’t understood.
So I will attempt to name some of those gaps – so we can close them together. In my experience, most observations can be observed working with charities of all sizes.
